Despite Pandemic: Discover Essen and the Ruhr Area
We’ve probably all never taken as many walks as we have since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Some people are already feeling a little frustrated because of it. But don’t let it get you down. Use the time and discover Essen and its surroundings. Our home is in the middle of the Ruhr area. Here are our ultimate excursion tips, for Ruhr area residents and for people who just have their temporary home here.
Essen
We start our tour in Essen, where we are at home as ZEITQUARTIER. Here we know our way around as housing experts. There is a lot to discover in Essen, even when restaurants and shopping centers are closed.
For example, discover the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Zeche Zollverein, a coal mine. Formerly a workplace for many miners, today a place to learn more about the centuries-old mining tradition of the Ruhr region.
Or take a bike tour to Lake Baldeney. Enjoy the spring awakening and do something for your health at the same time. There are countless opportunities to explore Lake Baldeney by bike. Of course, this also applies to the green lung in the middle of the city – the Gruga Park.
Bochum
Lake Kemnader is located in the south of Bochum. Here you can take a leisurely stroll or go on extensive bike tours. The Ruhr Valley is easy to explore even for inexperienced excursionists and offers many sights along the way.
In the heart of Bochum is the oasis of recreation, the city park. Here you can also stroll leisurely in the fresh air. The park offers many quiet corners and invites you to let your gaze wander into nature.
Herne
Herne borders directly on Bochum and has spruced itself up in recent years. The old moated castle Strünkede has been a popular destination for many years. Around it you can discover nature in the park and enjoy the fresh air.
Oberhausen
The Oberhausen Gasometer is known far beyond the borders of North Rhine-Westphalia. Even if the gasometer itself is currently closed, a bike tour to an important industrial monument of the Ruhr area is definitely worthwhile. The size alone is impressive.
And what else?
What always goes well, of course, and perhaps brings a little variety these days: geocaching. Here, a mundane walk becomes a little adventure, as the task is to track down the sights using only certain data.
Highly recommended for somewhat longer bike tours through the Ruhr region: cycling along old railroad tracks. Here you can discover the old industrial heart of the Ruhr area in a very sporty way.
And a final tip if you are looking for even more individual excursion tips: The app Koomot offers many ways to discover your own homeland in a very independent way. With the app, you can easily plan hiking tours on foot or by bike. In addition, the many recommendations from the Koomot community offer plenty of inspiration for your next tour.
